We lose muscle mass with age, partly driven by anabolic resistance – the reduced sensitivity to a given protein dose that promotes muscle building. Also, with age, chronic, low-level inflammation can impair muscle building. And because inflammation may be a driver of anabolic resistance, omega-3 fatty acids, which have potent anti-inflammatory effects, may help fight against muscle losses. Dr. Phillips submits that while these findings are exciting, more research is needed. In this clip, Dr. Stuart Phillips describes how omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to slow age-related declines in muscle mass and strength.
