The time of night that a person falls asleep is often influenced by their chronotype – their innate tendency to sleep at a particular time during a 24-hour period. Having a late chronotype differs from insomnia, however, which is often driven by change, especially change that affects relationships, employment, or family dynamics. Cognitive behavioral techniques help people who have insomnia identify what those changes are and develop strategies that promote sleep, such as practicing good sleep hygiene, stimulus control, and sleep restriction. In this clip, Dr. Ashley Mason describes what drives insomnia and how the condition can be treated.
