Aliquot #13: Sulforaphane from broccoli sprouts versus supplements

Drs. Jed Fahey and Rhonda Patrick

Sulforaphane, an isothiocyanate compound, is the most potent naturally occurring inducer of the body's key detoxification enzymes. While sulforaphane is derived naturally from a variety of cruciferous vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, kale, and mustard greens, with the highest quantities available from broccoli sprouts, it is also widely available as a dietary supplement. Although many supplement manufacturers do not take steps to preserve the integrity of their products and some have made misleading claims about their products' efficacy, a few reputable manufacturers produce quality supplements that have been used in clinical trials.
