@carlsonbjj Taurine’s role as an osmolyte may help prevent diseases of defective protein folding (ie. Alzheimer’s). Osmolytes are low-molecular weight chemical chaperones for protein folding, stabilizing proteins coming off the endoplasmic reticulum. By moving water and ions around, chemical chaperones help structure the cellular environment surrounding the protein such that the thermodynamically most probable and stable state is the protein’s proper folded state. This may be mechanism by which taurine is able to rescue learn/memory deficits in AD mice (which have misfolded proteins in their brain).
